The Buddhist Contradiction

When I travelled in Thailand, I found that the first thing that anyone would immediately associate with being Sri Lankan was Buddhism. Even with conversation failing, between the odd Thai accent, and my desperately trying to communicate in English, people would immediately say ‘The Buddha! The Buddha!’ when I said I was from Sri Lanka. I would nod while quietly smirking - how ironic, to be constantly asked whether I was from a Buddhist country, while I was in a Buddhist country that took its Buddhism much more to heart. Buddhism in Sri Lanka can but cower in shame in the tall, mighty shadows cast by the Buddhism of Thailand, or Burma. It fails in comparison. It fails even without comparison.

It doesn’t take a genius to know that Buddhism in Sri Lanka has long since left much to be desired - the contradictions are nothing new. Our Buddhism is mainly dictated to us in terms of rituals and traditions, steeped in culture rather than philosophy. In school, one learns to memorise the Pali sayings, not really ever knowing what they mean or why you say them. We learn about the history of Nationalism linked to Buddhism in Sri Lanka in a far more in-depth manner than the true essence of what the Buddha taught. Not that tradition and ritual is bad or unimportant, personally as a child I loved the rituals and the customs of Sri Lankan Buddhism - what is sad is that we have failed to strike a balance between ritual and philosophy, between custom and true self-discovery. Leave aside all of that - for centuries, Buddhism in Sri Lanka has been riddled with the most grotesque and contradictory kind of disease, one much worse than all those other things - the caste system. There are temples built by the high-castes which to this day do not allow those of any other caste to enter, there is a huge rift between low-caste monks and high-caste monks and one is hard-pressed to find a senior monk that will ordain a child without asking him whether he is a Govigama first.

As of late, Buddhism has become even more deeply linked with a feeling of Nationalism, of being Sri Lankan. It seems almost every week, some Sri Lankan somewhere is getting red in the face about the alleged tarnishing of the Buddhist image. If it’s not Akon, it’s Buddha Bar.

In this article , it seems the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka has taken it upon himself to act, or make Sri Lanka act, as the global defender of Buddhism. Someone in the comments stream validly asks, ‘Is Sri Lanka the sole authority on Buddhism? What about China, Thailand, Vietnam, Japan or even Bhutan?’. This one voice of reason is something of a rarity. Of course, any comments like these are drowned out quickly by the noise of the shouting and the chest-thumping, comments such as (I kid you not) ‘If the France can do that why can’t we start a “Jesus Bar” and respond?’, ‘Can’t we wage war on France?’, ‘Take the issue to UN, pass a resolution and don’t give Visas to french tourists’. All in all very mature - and of course, very Buddhist.

The recent Poson Poya is a good example. During the day there was loud music being played in the vicinity in which I live. It had continued non-stop from the previous night. I listened in, very few of the songs were ‘Bhakthi Gee’ and had any religious flavour to it (not that that excuses plain and simple sound pollution, in my opinion), majority of the music was just Sinhalese pop music. My grandmother at home was trying to observe Sil and meditate that day - perhaps doing what all good ‘Buddhists’ should have been doing. Of course, she would have needed super-concentration powers, given the racket. Doesn’t just about anyone know that one should always try and be quiet on Poya days, to maintain some peace and quiet, so that those who are observing Sil may go about it? It’s pretty much an unwritten law. Or it was, when we were growing up. That’s what we were always told. Don’t play loud music even in your room, don’t run around the streets screaming and playing, don’t ride your bicycles and ring their bells all day.

Driving around late that night, I was further astounded. Guys dancing outside emptied Dansal on the street, guys in masks with Sri Lankan and Buddhist flags walking in raucous packs in the middle of the road, scaring children passing by. Don’t get me wrong - I don’t mind the air of festivity. I enjoy a traditional Sri Lankan celebration as much as the next person. But Buddhist festivals aren’t like other religious festivals - simply because Buddhism is inherently not a religion that encourages people to dress in their finest, sing and dance and make merry with your families. Dare I say any sacred day for Buddhists should be one of reflection and thought about one’s own life and deeds.

The mood on the street that night had a distinct tinge of arrogant pride, recklessness, careless abandon - a sort of ‘itching for a fight’ mood. And this, on a Poya day. Has the way we celebrate National Holidays changed forever since Victory Day last year?

Firstly, why is it, when Sri Lankans are so obviously innately party-animals, do we still insist that getting drunk and dancing to loud music is a ‘western evil’? Since when did having a good time become a result of ‘western influence’? Sri Lankans have always liked a good party - I live in a perfectly Sinhala Buddhist area, where there is a megaphoned Sangeetha Show almost once a week.

This idea that we are being forced to believe about ourselves - this idea that we are some holy, righteous Buddhists - is completely false. This idea is being forced not only on us, but also everyone around us - the world is being told that we are a land of righteous Buddhists. The tragedy is there is nothing wrong with who we actually are - there is nothing wrong with letting loose once in awhile and having a good time. There is nothing wrong with peacefully having a drink with your friends. There is nothing wrong with dancing to loud music. If we are Buddhists, we’d know that this is not contributing to the development of the mind, but this behaviour - which comes naturally to us - is better than the new trend in behaviour we’ve taken on. This trend of behaviour in which we’re blind to our own flaws, in which we make a point of shouting to the world that we’re better than others even though it’s hopelessly obvious that we are not.

Our brand of Buddhism - one that we are allegedly so proud of. So far it has lead us to nothing but bombs, burnings and mobs in robes on the streets with sticks and stones. If I were to show the Buddha the Akon music video, or the monks in Sri Lankan parliament - which would he say is worse? Would he be more disappointed in the Buddha Bars, or the monks with sticks, rioting about Shah Rukh Khan on the streets and urging mobs to bash and burn all the stores around the area? Would he actually care that something as insignificant as a statue is in some insignificant music video, or that a country is taking it upon itself to be the world’s moral police in his name? Would he be more saddened by people having a good time in a bar that happens to be called the Buddha Bar, or by the fact that low-caste temples are being burned in the coastal areas of Sri Lanka?

Sri Lanka has created Buddhist Fundamentalism, something that I would have thought impossible to do. It is a gigantic contradiction to the mere essence of Buddha’s philosophy, a huge, tragic thorn in the side of a philosophy that is all about compassion, understanding, and inward reflection. We have infused the practice of this philosophy, which was entirely founded on the idea that anyone could arrive at eternal peace and that all were equal in trying, with idiotic and archaic separations like caste and nationality, friend and foe. We have used this idea, one that was so pure in its intentions, to feel superior to others.

All I ask is this - do these people realise the irony of what they say and do, and they think we don’t? Or do they not realise it, and do they genuinely believe that they are doing the right thing?

Honestly, I don’t know which is worse.

    they did that with tamil grievances ( and did not care, in fact welcomed, that their actions helped the murderous tamil tiger terrorists and they acted as their willing propagandists).

    no that one cash cow has been defeated they want another.

  3. honestly, as an atheist with strong in grained affinity with catholicism, and one who find so called ‘buddhist philosophy’ praised here (in contrast to practice) plain silly , living in a free lovely and now peaceful, buddhist country, i find these attempts at hate mongering disgusting.

    and all this from a person who is clearly ignorant of basic facts of buddhist and other history. among others there is ample reasons ( i refer to non mythological ones btw ) why sri lanka ( and its government) can claim to be the preserver and defender of theravada buddism and all of us (even non buddhists like me who think buddhism idiotic ) can be proud of that fact. thai ppl etc know that, you obviously don’t .

  5. Sittingnut - go sit ur nut somewhere. As a Bhuddist I can honestly confirm electra’s point of view. Buddhism is, or was, a true, wonderful philosphy; it (de)evolved into a religion; and now it’s little less than a system of custom and loose guidelines.
    Speaking of which, why are we the guardian of BHUDDISM? I thought SL was a ‘Multi-cultural, Multi-ethnic, Multilingual nation’ (in the words of the top men)? What about those other cultures, ethnicities, languages? Why are we favoring Bhuddism? Does a rabbit shit in the woods?

    Electra, while I agree with most of what you say, I find that general loutish behaviour at celebrations, matches, etc isn’t confined to Buddhist gatherings. On Saturday afternoon, I was trapped in traffic by that Royal College parade on Duplication Road. Aside from the general inconsideration of other road users, I was really annoyed by the attitude shown by the paraders. I was stuck in a narrow lane leading on to Duplication, and in front of me was a car with a woman and her early teens daughter. They were subjected to a continuous stream of abuse, hooting, and lewd gestures from the schoolboys dancing in the parade. This went on nonstop for half an hour. Meanwhile, the drunk old uncles — who I guess were Royal old boys and teachers — shambling along between the trucks grinned inanely and did nothing to stop this behaviour. So if that’s the sort of attitude in a supposedly disciplined ‘college’, what do you expect outside a dansala?

  7. Firstly, I am neither praising nor criticising Buddhism nor any other religion or belief in this post. To think that that was the point of this post is just plain blind. All I’m saying is that we preach a lot for a country that does not practice one of its principal religions the way it should be practiced - and worse, we give others a superior attitude in the very name of this religion, when the way we behave is so clearly contradictory to our alleged beliefs.

    David - I saw the Royal Parade too. The fact that there are still 60-something men in Sri Lanka who like to wear their school ties and dance on the road while holding their school flag is lame. But that’s another post!

    I don’t agree that this behaviour is actually unsavoury - I have no problem with this, this is how Sri Lankans celebrate and that’s fine. Of course if they are making a public nuisance of themselves, actually holding up traffic, groping women (!), that’s another matter. In fact I’m saying this kind of behaviour is natural to us. All I’m saying is, we can’t afford to behave like that on Buddhist holy-days (holidays?) and then expect to beat others down on their moral conduct in the name of Buddhism!

    There’s a glaring discrepancy there!

    I’m not saying it’s just Buddhist gatherings in Sri Lanka that behave that way - one can go to any cricket match or outdoor Musical Show to see the proof of that. It’s Sri Lankan. And perhaps this kind of behaviour is traditional for Buddhist holidays in Sri Lanka. All I’m saying is that our brand of Buddhism is such - let’s admit it. Let’s not pretend we’re something we’re not. Let’s just admit that the problem here is with ‘the west’. Let’s admit that it’s a problem with race and not religion. Because what we’re saying is - while Sri Lankans can behave any way they want on Buddhist holidays or in front of temples or at religious gatherings, white people can’t be seen showing any sign of alleged ‘disrespect’.

    It’s like insulting siblings right? I can talk shit about siblings all day long and whine and bitch and moan to you - but the moment you open your mouth to agree with me, you’re the bad guy. It’s MY sibling, I have a right to bad mouth them, but if you do, I’ll defend them?

  17. Prasad, Snut has this little ‘cryptic thing’ for our lovely Electra, you see. Emphasis on little. She shot him down in flames and he resorted to nuisance calls and flowers. Now he stalks her blog. It’s the only place he leaves comments (as many as he can) since no one reads his blog anymore.

    As for his comment on my father, it’s because he has no grasp of the nuances of the English language (nor of Sinhalese, he regularly gets his butt kicked on the Sinhalese blogs), and has misunderstood my response to mean that I don’t know my father. It’s quite funny to watch him set up a whole argument based on his incomprehension of punctuation and grammar. Have a look through some of the posts here or just google Sittingnut or “Sri Lankan online idiots”. The second search sends you straight to his blog.

    the fact that my retorting claims about him were in contrast truthful ( and as he well knows, can be backed up by others who were once so close to him) probably made him lose his grip to this extent.

    blogger here also displays an uneducated ignorance of basic facts of history about sri lanka’s role as a defender and preserver of theravada buddhism. in contrast, thai ppl seem to be well aware of that, by her own account .

    imo continuation of that role is no more objectionable or contradictory to concept of secular muti religious state than any other country preserving their cultural treasures.

    underlying all this is their fear of a self confident sri lanka and sri lankans. they born with a slave mentality and willingly dependent on foreign masters for both material, moral, and ideological, sustenance cannot have a role in such a sri lanka except in the despised margins of society.

    hence their fear. hence also their runnings away and insults when confronted with facts and reason . lol

    David, if you think I would be pleased that you are engaging in the slinging of personal, petty attacks with Sittingnut on my blog, I am not. I really am not impressed that you keep bringing up the issue of the flowers to counter his arguments - as far as I know, I have never talked about this online or in public. It’s really immature, it’s not something that even concerned you or that he did directly to you. You really cannot afford to keep bringing up this story every time you get into an argument with him online. I have never used it against him. I don’t wish to - it is irrelevant to all our disagreements and it simply would not serve any purpose for me to suddenly bring that up. Of course I could have, a long time ago, if I wanted everyone to laugh at him or if I took pleasure in publicly humiliating him - but I never did because it would have been cheap, immature and unfair. Not to mention that it would not have said a whole lot about my personality.

    David I enjoy reading your comments and posts because they are usually so bold and clear - don’t let your readers down by resorting to this kind of name-calling and mud-slinging.

    Also, for the record, he has never called me. I never ’shot him down’. And honestly, he never propositioned me. They were just flowers for goodness sake, let’s not read too much into it! I was really not affected that much by it, I forgot about it. I don’t believe Indi was a witness - maybe I told him about it later, as he is my friend. Maybe he was there - I don’t remember.

    I know Sittingnut takes his own liberties with information about our families (that seems to be his personal favourite method of attack) and insulting them when he wants to insult us - why engage with him? Do you think it makes a difference? He is the perfect example of the delusional, selfish nutjobs who want to exploit everything and everyone in this country to achieve their own psychotic goals.

I’ll just address your last point first: I’d be happy to debate or argue anything with Snut anywhere, but your blog seems to be where he’s taken up residence. Unfortunately, you seem to tolerate this unsavory character and allow him to attack anyone who comments on your blog. Sort of like having a rabid dog in your garden who bites all your guests. Yes, it is YOUR garden and your dog, but eventually your guests are gonna stop visiting. Just think about it.

    Yes, you’re right that talking about Snut and his flowers is probably immature, and yes, I’m often accused of this. But as I said already, you maybe OK with him slandering your parents, but I’m not OK with him doing that to mine. If every comment I make on your blog is going to be mat by this sort of ‘rasthiadhu’ behaviour I’m forced to hit him where it hurts.

    As I said, your blog, your rules, and there are many blogs where it is possible to comment without being abused or one’s parents’ reputations slandered by anonymous trolls. Unfortunately yours, Electra, is no longer one of them.

  24. I understand. If I were you, I probably wouldn’t come here either, leave alone comment. The annoyance caused by one rambling comment from Sittingnut is just not worth my time.

    In fact, there was a time when I prevented myself from blogging. I thought to myself, ‘There is just no point. I do not need to be angered or irritated, I do not need to go around feeling infuriated by a stranger.’ So I stopped. But I came to a point where I did realise YES - this is MY blog. So I started again, and there he was - practically on every single post I made, saying the same thing, no matter what the post was about.

    He doesn’t make me angry anymore. Don’t get me wrong, I still read through every single comment he makes here - but it’s always just rubbish. It’s always the same thing - totally unsubstantiated, totally sensationalist rubbish. He just likes drama - he likes to make sweeping statements about other people and their families and this is how he tries to engage you.

    But, I say, if everyone stops responding - he will eventually understand that what he says and what he thinks is so insignificant, that no one cares anymore.

    I could somehow prevent him from ever commenting on this blog, but that would defeat the purpose of blogging. I genuinely believe in free speech and will not be a hypocrite - the entire reason I like the nature of blogging is that it is accessible to anyone with a computer and an internet connection.

    I think by reacting we are giving him more importance than is necessary. He is merely a mild irritation, nothing more sinister. Surely, that much is obvious. He is a child - literally a name-calling, mud-slinging child. Are you no better?

    Take the high road, everyone. The high road is always good.

  26. Well, Electra, if free speech is your thing, great, but then it seems a bit strange that you expressed your displeasure at what I was saying to Snut. If you’re tolerant of his obnoxious attacks on people who comment here, surely you should be tolerant when I defend myself or attack him. I don’t believe in turning the other cheek, I’m afraid, so taking the high road will mean either not reading your blog or at least not commenting on it.

    No great loss from your point of view, of course, but eventually it’ll just be you and Snut. Again, it’s really upto you of course.

    I must mention that I read your blog far less than I used to, and often just don’t bother with reading the comments section, simply because it means wading through the mindless drivel he spews. I know the principle of pacifism is never to react no matter the provocation, but unfortunately that means Snut is in control of your comments section and not you.
