final battle : you can never tell, chuck berry (OST pulp fiction)

wowie. i think waking up, first day of school, mental breakdown, driving and wedding worked perfectly…

hold on. hold on hold on hold on, to the good times, to your self respect, to some inkling of happiness.

hang in there. it’s a fight, but you’re strong enough. we all are ultimately, we just never seem to think so.

remember all the nice things, the good things. forget the bitterness and the resentment and the regret. it’s all posion in your blood, let it go.

wait for it to blow over. one morning, you’ll wake up and think ‘hey, that wasn’t so bad’. and you’ll still be alive and kicking. time alone doesn’t heal, you will have to yourself.

be strong. you are coming out of this a bigger, better, smarter and stronger person. who ever said life sucks?

mary’s breakthrough

mary j. blige often seems to come out looking like she’s had a serious wardrobe malfunction, and she isn’t as half as young, beautiful or sexy as say, beyonce. but arun has reminded me just how great i think she is.

this april, in a little shop in hikkaduwa, while reaching for a CD of trance music, i toppled over a few other CDs and shattered the cover of the then somewhat new mary j. blige album, ‘the breakthrough’. i was compelled to buy this CD for 500/=, due to the damage i’d caused it. so, grudgingly, i bought it and started to listen to it when bored once back home. i loved it.

she’s not called the queen of hip-hop and soul for no reason. she’s just a marvelous singer and a soulful performer. her duet with U2 on ‘the breakthrough’, the re-release of U2’s hit single ‘one’ is one of the very many examples of this. her powerful yet soothing vocals on this track make it a better song than it ever was before. ‘be without you’, ‘the breakthrough’’s most popular love ballad/single, is a most amazing song by any standards; simply in the fact that even those that don’t like this kind of music can be blown away by the sheer quality of her singing. in a time of hopeless wannabes and too many divas, it’s good to have the likes of mary around, who not only constantly hikes up the standard of her singing and performing and keeps challenging herself to reach better and better heights, but also projects an image that is not squeaky-clean, but ultimately true to real life. whether you want some easy r&b music in the background, or you want to really appreciate a golden voice, some mary j. blige is what you want. one has to admit, she’s simply the best at what she’s doing.

she is a real woman, tattoed, alcoholism and drug addiction in her past, she has risen to a place in which she is all ‘what you see is what you get’. her music is genuine, and her image un glamorous. rock on mary.

jazz, white, and some red

despite the hedious prom-night decor of cardboard stars and bright blue UV lights, despite the really bad (but free) wine and all the unforgivable mingling going on while people should have been paying more attention to jerome speldewinde, despite, even, the terrible DJ music that we somehow managed to tolerate, last night in the lower crystal room of the taj samudra was great.

we tried really hard to keep jerome where we wanted him the most, behind the microphone, guitar in hand. we asked for encore after encore but he had a ‘plane to catch’.

we danced the night away, rather badly, as arun will proudly tell you. all of us together, gave that party exactly what we needed (high five, twiggy). we reached a sheer delirium and went outright crazy.

the atmosphere wasn’t ideal, i still hold the warmth of the friday nights at DBU with jerome real, real close, but the food was good and the drinks were free. and we were all together, happy and loving each other from beginning to end.

all my crazies were great. here’s to more and more and more!

toby

toby was good, kind of ferocious, as you all must remember, but good nonetheless.

many of you never really befriended him, especially more recently, since he became increasingly grumpy and frustrated due to his illness, and would hence get really harmful. but he was good, palyful and silly and young.

last night the vet had to ‘put him down’ due to the malignancy of his disease. but we’ll remember him when you guys walk into my house and nothing barks determinedly anymore. and we’ll remember him when feeding time comes and there’s one less mouth to feed. and we’ll remember him because we’ll, in some way, miss him.

R.I.P toby.
