my life, as is, currently, in a few, dismembered sentences.

i am addicted to Lost (finally) and enamoured by Sayid.

i am applying to university in the united states of america, and i’m hoping that they will want to not only accept me, but fund me financially, despite the fact that i spent a lot of my life hating on that country publicly and privately. (i’m hoping US university deans don’t have the inner eye that would have been able to see into the efforts i put into my vendetta against their kind)

arun is in london with his beautiful sister, living it up and not even pretending that he isn’t.

the first onstage semi final for this year got postponed last saturday night at 11 pm due to technical difficulties. flake will be back on this saturday. the groupies better all come back, banners, boards and all.

did you know that they performed william shakespeare’s ‘the merchant of venice’ 30 times in nazi germany between 1934 and 1939? i can’t help thinking they couldn’t have picked a less anti-semitic text to represent their cause.

i just re-read libba bray’s ‘a great and terrible beauty’, and it was as beautiful as it was the last time, if not more so. i had momentarily forgotten the delicacy of her style, the fragile emotions, the evocative sentences, the irresistable characters. how alive she made the world of corsettes and tea dances for me, how well she drew the parrallels between their feelings and mine; their irrepressible youthfulness, their hunger for love, their undying romanticism and all the truths about truth itself.

i must re-read audrey niffenegger’s ‘the time traveller’s wife’ and love it all over again, too. thank you, anush. it was a perfect birthday present. so perfect it’s a little poetic.

i panic a little about my future and if am i am going about things the right way. i suppose i cannot know the answers to these questions until i am sure it’s too late.

i get a little nostalgic over my past and the things i’ve left behind, wondering if i did wrong by leaving them at all. i suppose i will never know for sure until i am almost certain it has become another wrong decision i must learn to live with.

he still makes me laugh. every day, there’s something new i like about him. i find great comfort in this, the one thing above all else that i do know for sure when it seems like all life is about is mystery.

‘there are no safe choices, only other choices’. uh huh. i don’t think any of us ever know. it’s just a leap of faith we all have to take.

  1. States huh? i kinda always thought you’d go to india and dance? :s heheh another WRONG assumption i guess! States is great…Rishi says so! (he’s rarely wrong!) and of course they’ll accept you…do well! take care.

  2. i CAN dance in america, no matter where i go, i will. in fact, most places in the united states are homes to a very vibrant culture of extremely progessive and creatively novel performance and theatre arts.

  3. So does that mean your going to the states to dance? or what?

  4. he is uber hot, isnt he!?! **grin, wink**

woman, I was under the impression that you were applying to India, as well..thats what you told me six weeks ago, before I left, in Barefoot!

Anyway the US isnt as bad as we make it up to be, so good luck and have fun filling those ridiculously long applications and writing a million entrance essays…where are you applying, by the way?

  5. we create ourselves by the choices we make and should always be ready to bear complete responsibility for them. hardest thing to do for most ppl.

generally speaking if one is not in sl best place to be is usa, unless one has particular reasons for being somewhere else. there has never been a place where individuality is so highly valued, ever.

btw only 30 productions ( i hope you don’t mean only 30 performances) of “the merchant of venice” in nazi germany? i would have expected more. it is actually very anti semitic ( on the surface) in original, intentionally so (even “hath not a jew eyes”speech can be interpreted both ways ), however much we may not want to see that in shakespeare . he was of course catering to market (as usual) and should not be judged by modern ( rather hypocritical )standards. anyway imo one should look out for covert expressions of racial hatred ( sometimes covered up by political correctness) than overt ones, they are more dangerous. some ppl do not know how racist they are.

“lost”? isn’t that sort of a camping for yuppies tv series ? :-)

  7. Hey hon, the states? you’ll love it. You’re exactly the kind of person they’d love to give tons of fin aid to. Brilliant, vibrant and passionate. Good luck on all of that. Miss you guys.

  8. dimithri : i’m not applying to study dance, no. but i am giving priority to schools with good theatre and dance programmes, whether they offer them as majors or as extra courses.

savi : yeah, a lot of things made me change my mind. the fact that i found bangalore to be particularly crowded and ‘too much’ was one of them. also, india doesn’t offer grants at all and the only way to get there is to get some government scholarship that the embassy gives…and well, its mighty hard to get. indian university is almost as expensive as american universitry, now. its not cheap anymore. america is best in terms of the two o’s : opportunities, and options. its full of both and seems to have the widest horizion…

sittingnut : lost isn’t like that! it’s awesome ; surprisingly well made and well written. shot on location, in hawaii, too. it’s utterly beautiful.

savi3 : i guess it’s unfair to say i hate america as a whole. i suppose, like many, i have very strong feelings about george bush and all those idiots that voted for him. it’s half the country, you know, and when you think of it like that, it scares me that so many people must like him. and i can’t like people like that, as judgemental as it is of me. but i’ve realized that with the united states, its all about WHERE you go…

M : my love. we miss you, too. come back soon! (atleast for a holiday)

  9. You’ll do very well in the US & what’s more you’ll teach them about yourself and S/L. The yanks need to become more cosmopolitan. I passed my SAT exams at age 16+ and got a scholarship to Duke. It’s a very, very big place. Yale for eg. is a whole town etc…S/nut the US is not the only other option :-) I’m glad you’re not going to India either - it’s too disorganised and you will be lost amongst the millions. Don’t be afraid of what’s to come - you will love it. Have a friend who was a top lawyer in for a NY acq & merges firm - he’s now an actor in LA. He went to a great drama school in NY - I think NY is quite cosy - you would fit right in. If you are going there - pop into Bar 54 & say hello to Stacey. She refused to give Norah Jones a free drink but say my name & you’ll get one :-) . Good Luck Electra!!

  10. I had dinner with Libba Bray once, she’s incredibly cool. We had a really long-winded, interesting conversation that I can’t say I really remember, but it was a good night.

  11. wow sophie; that sounds so cool. i can imagine, she must be great. tell her she has a sri lankan fan (i even chose to use her book for academic work, recently) in me if you are to ever meet her again.

ashanthi : thanks a lot, every bit of encouragement helps at this point. also, NY is definitely at the top of my list.

  12. Are you watching Lost Season 3? Not as good, but The Others are shown a lot more.

    Comment by Theena — November 2, 2006 @ 4:19 pm

  13. Hey - you’ll be fine. No seriously, my friend who has gone from merchant banker/mgmt consultant to ACTOR. He’s very like “theonetruecoolguy”. He’s done realy well and surprised us all. I do respect him for following his heart. He’s worked bloody hard to get there but it is paying of.

However, you, by just being you, will stand out in NY. So, hopefully you won’t have to work as hard :-)

Either way - I think Nu Yorkers are ready for an Electra. I’ll come and visit and maybe we can get Morq over too.
