plays, movies and going on strike
from a production of caught in the net in london
on saturday we went to see caught in the net. a play directed by nafeesa amirudeen, starring the ever so popular mohammed adamally, this was the perfect sequel to ray cooney’s run for your wife. caught in the net was hilarious, the flawless example of good, tasteful comedy. from the very opening scene, the play was charged with super-high energy. the timing was crisp, the movements were well timed, the acting was great, the script was intelligent and witty, all in all, this is something i really enjoyed and that i recommend everyone to see. adamally has to be the most gifted comic actor on a colombo stage, and he delivered true to this reputation of his. however, unlike in run for your wife, it was not john smith (played by adamally) who takes center stage and occupies the spotlight, it is his lodger and friend, eccentric (with a perfectly consistent cockney accent), stanley (bloody) gardner played brilliant by sean amarasekera. sean put up a seriously stunning performance. this character could easily have been over-done if not played with understanding and caution, but sean played it to near perfection, getting all the punch-lines, the voice changes, the actions just right. ashini fernando delivered the young and funky aura of vicky smith with precision. she was energetic, merciless, demanding and unperturbed by her father’s antics to keep her from seeing gavin smith. kevin francke, who played gavin, was perhaps the only disappointment if any. there was a slight inconsistency in his performance that was apparent at moments. wanda godleib and nedra williams were wonderful english wives/mothers. arjuna wignarajah, who played stan’s aged father was simply hilarious. playing characters of such an extreme always prove difficult, leave alone doing it with undying consistency through out the play. not a moment was he not stalling or stammering or shivering on his legs. a must see.
yesterday anush, savi and i went to see fantastic four at savoy. well, it was mosly silly. you know, the usual marvel comic super hero type film. good looking people, noble ideals, half-funny pun lines, and some super powers thrown in with a weird looking and mentally ill super villain. its good fun though. jessica alba manages to be a little less annoying than her usual self (anush, STOP glowering at me), and the human torch is literally, quite a hottie, non?

anyway, life goes on as it was. today all drivers of private buses, trishaws and school vans have gone on strike because the cops have decided to seriously up the traffic offense fines. right. wtf? if these jokers were to simply follow road regulations and drive in a way that is safe for all road users, they wouldnt get fined, now would they? them going on strike is so going to fix everything. however, yesterday, the president of the bus drivers association was explaining why they were going on strike, and it also made miniscule sense. or maybe he’s just a smooth talker. they want a fair deal, am equal equation. he says that if we had developed infra structure, good road systems etc, they wouldnt mind the increase in fines. they say that with the current conditions, its unfair to be increasing the fine prices, as they are forced to deal with the rotten road conditions and the unmanagable amount of traffic on the roads, hence forced to break a few rules here and there. the changes they are asking to see will take decades! if at all, knowing this country. it seems we have resorted to our all time favourite activity when faced with threat : go on strike.
sheesh men…Fantastic four was corny right to the core, to start with the name reminded me of enid blyton books and the movie in short is what u would get if u put spider man,shrek and robots together.
The only good thing about the movie was The Human Torch.

Jessica Alba used to be cute, but then came that horror of a flick “Honey” where she was plain annoying. But back in the day she was wonderful, whilst watching Flipper I remember cursing that they kept focusing on that fish (or was it a dolphin?).

about the strike you are quite unfair. what you pay is what you get and we pay absurdly low prices for public transport. if you control and keep low a price for a good you get low quality and/or a shortage, control the bus fares same way you get the same result. fines won’t solve anything, realistic prices might.

Suranga: what planet are you from? We pay absurdly low prices because people who commute daily can’t really afford any higher. You or I can pay a decent, realistic price to travel from A to B. Did you ever stop to wonder what the avg income of a bus load of people is? then try calculating travelling by bus to work everyday and paying your so called ‘realistic’ prices and feeding your two kids and wife and sending them to school. Suranga: I don’t think so. Just bc you have higher bus fares it won’t be enough to keep the drivers happy bc they get only a small cut out of the deal, the big chunk goes to the owner, (and lease and stuff). Increasing fares will only fatten the owners pocket. The driver will still drive like a devil on speed (pardon the pun) bc he has to do that to cover his requirement set out by the owner. You might argue that higher fares will mean the owner can now ask the drivers to be more careful bc he now earns more..but is that realistic? I think not, thats not have capitalism works, we always want more and more.
So, the answer is some form of regulation in order to protect the poor buggers on the road who get knocked down every other day (if i had a rupee for every time i almost got hit by a bus..). It’s just a basic economic externalities argument. Fines is one such form of regulation, ideally it’ll give an incentive for the drivers to be more careful bc otherwise it’ll hit their pocket. You internalize the external cost (ok sorry for the economic shit). It isn’t perfect but I think at least they’re trying to do something about it.
I think the argument about infrastructure is cock..just bc the road is bad doesn’t mean you need to drive at 80 on a single lane road no? If anything you need to be more careful. Finally, you might say then what about the poor drivers? they have to go home with nothing in their pockets? well, valid point, but we need to balance between the safety of our pedestrians and the earnings of bus drivers. Bus drivers aren’t the only ones who earn little, most of the pedestrians getting knocked down earn less than that. Thats the fault of the economy, so we can’t go punishing pedestrians for that by keeping fines low.

suranga : i think you’re just out to get me, even if i was making sense.
ddm and scourge are right though, you can’t up the prices of bus fare etc…it’s not like the travelling conditions are all that worth it…i mean look at it. you cant get to and from one place with 20 bucks in your pocket anymore. you need to pay through your nose if you’re poor for what? to get squashed, stepped on, sexually molested and possibly even robbed on an uncomfortably packed-to-capacity bus. so no, people can’t pay more. why? because they bloody cant! people are poor! its the reality. this is one never ending cycle isnt it? people cant pay more, because mostly their either unemployed or employed at a job with crappy wages. most of them have families, usually with a large number of children. not everyone on a bus is a scourge with a well paying job.
yes, the increase of fines is an incentive for these people to drive more carefully. have you even SEEN how bus drivers drive? its lunacy! them going on strike because of the increase in fines is an equivalent of them openly and publicly saying that they drive in a manner that is not only illegal, but totally lethal. its the same thing, isnt it? why would they care if the fines went up, if they werent going to get fined for driving like maniacs?

The strikes are organized by the Private Bus Owners Association not the private bus drivers association. Fines or no fines I doubt the drivers give a shit. They want to earn their money and go home. I believe the drivers had a problem or if they were SO affected by this they would have gone on strike saying their wages are too low. But that is not the case as it seems.
Like DDM says, that is not how capitalism works. Like in the corporate playing field you have to make bend the rules and break a few to get ahead of comepetition. The owners are like the management and the drivers like the sales staff. management sets you a target and at the end of the day (literarily in the bus scene) you do what it takes to make your target. If not you don’t eat.
Its a vicious cycle. Suranga, when you get out there into the real world and realize the practical problems of your theories let us know. Until then, think twice before formulating them.

what a load of spoilt dilettante socialists we have in the so called sri lankan blogosphere! and they have the gall to ask me to live in the real world! enough said.
i was merely pointing out that according to the very basic economics theory of supply and demand(a theory which has been proved to work in infinite places and at infinite times) a artificially low price will create a shortage and/or degrade the quality of the good or service concerned. and that the deplorable condition of the public transport is just a another example. do any of you seriously challenge the theory of supply and demand? if you do i will not try to change your mind but can only pity you. do any of you expect that the new fines will improve the driving conditions? remind me in a year or two then we will see( don’t worry i will be around).
electra and most of you are right, people are desperately poor and economic theory is ‘unfair’ but that’s the way world operates.as Jesus said ‘we will always have the poor’.
