and it goes on…and ON…and ON

will this never end? it’s only getting KIND of old and annoying.

the argument on the privatization that started ages ago, continues, steady as ever between indi and morquendi. although sometime ago, there were many other bloggers (including myself) pitching into this rather interesting debate with great enthusiasm, it died out the moment they realized it was not going anywhere, and the only direction it WAS going in could certainly bring nothing but unnecessary malice between otherwise perfectly nice, smart people. the moment they realized it wasn’t going anywhere good, or indeed USEFUL, they decided to DROP IT. however, indi and morq rabildly continue biting each other’s heads off, as you can see here. blinded by their own pompous righteousness, they refuse to give this up. i sided with morq sometime ago, and even now, perhaps i could, was i not irritated by both his and indi’s apparent immaturity. to give you a taste of my views, here’s a comment i left on indi’s blog.

does anyone see NO POINT in this debate, or is just me? for those of you who have been following this debate from its initial stages, you can observe that it has gotten really sidetracked, and has ceased to be a professional informative debate. it has instead turned into one big dirty mud slinging match. really immature, and quite quite POINTLESS.

indi and morq aren’t taking their views anywhere important. whether or not the privatization takes place, still, at the end of the day, will NOT be affected by their bickering. i understand their concern for the countrie’s local ed system (i DO?!) but i simply cannot for the life of me comprehend this incessent arguing.

indi, morq, its not like either of you are going to back down. EVER. you’re not going to admit that one of you might be right, and the other wrong. indi keeps bringing up statistics from the WB, and morq keeps digging up dirt on indi’s family. whats the POINT? boys, its not going to change anything. i’m sorry. the truth is harsh, but it doesnt make it any less the truth! none of you are going to admit defeat. you are entitled to your opinions, and you both believe yourself to be the sole source of truth on this planet. how, and good god WHEN is this going to end?

you’re just going to end up hating each other, and the entire local blogosphere is going to end up sick and tired of this age old argument. and what for? you’re both perfectly capable, and intelligent and obviously very concerned for a national cause of distress. so take the concern elsewhere and do something productive with it! dont just sit on your asses and get online every night to bash each other up.

are you both seriously immature enough to think that you alone know the universal truth? haven’t you heard of something called an opinion? well people are allowed to have them, however different from your’s they may be! nothing is black and white. or right and wrong. or ‘indi’ and ‘morq’. you both obviously with powerful conviction have strong morals and principles that you intend to live by, no matter what. while i admire you for sticking your ground through this, maybe its time to broaden those narrow little things you call your minds to the fact that their might be more to life than YOUR debate, and YOUR perspective, and YOUR version of the truth. give me a break.

hasn’t it been done enough? hasn’t it gone on for long enough? they already know which of us is with which of them, they already know who supports them and who rejects them. niether of them bring in new arguments, new perspectives or are prepared to come to a soloution using compromise, considering both of them create good and interesting arguments at different points in time. realizing the sheer futility in this entire debate, i just cannot picture it becoming or turning into anything other than what it has festered into already : downright annoying.

  1. Mud-slinging - bad, but the indi’s post was a satire of some of the defects of Morq’s argument. I agree it shouldn’t get personal and the level of debate should rise…because aaagh, let me pull out poetry with shameful licentiousness…great discourse shines light on dark caves, it raises us above the savage to the loftiness of great civilisation, and with outstretched hands (or arses) we touch the face of God…

  2. I think you capture the level of debate pretty well:

“indi keeps bringing up statistics from the WB, and morq keeps digging up dirt on indi’s family”

I’m not personally pissed at Morquendi, who I actually like. His argument just has all the hallmarks of arguments used by the Anti-Globalization crowd, Pol Pot, Mao, Kim Jung Il, George Bush, etc. There’s a marked adherence to ideology and dismal of facts or anything academic as ’slanted’. The focus is on attacking people, not ideas, and its very effective. I’m more interested in the general style than anyone saying it, and I’m interested in finding tools to fight it.

  3. ru : right. :) thanks for the very insightful analysis anyway.

indi : there are such things as limits. and i can safely say you and morq have taken this thing too far.

  4. I totally disagree. Firstly, I firmly believe that you can never have too much debate. Discourse is what differentiates us from other primates. We have a constant, solid way to communicate, to trade ideas and I say use this, to it’s fullest extent.

Sure in the middle of it, you may lose your cool and sling some mud. In the long run however this debate has brought about some great ideas. If only the rest of the country had the tools to discuss this topic so openly.

I understand that you’re sick of the topic. Many people are. Well there’s a solution for that problem. Don’t read the posts. Indi and Morquendi are exercising their rights as citizens of a free country - they’re discussing what they think is good or bad for Sri Lanka.

You have said that neither bring in new arguments or new perspectives. On the contrary, almost every piece written by either of the two (save Indi’s recent satire) has brought in even a little fresh meat.

So yeah, in a nut shell what I’m saying is that the more Indi and Morq go at each other (for whatever motive), the more new ideas come out in the open. In the end, more debate is always positive.

  6. gu : are you joking? their recent posts are far from being even mildly pleasent. leave alone positive. dont you see? for them this has just turned into them being right. there’s nothing more to it. their going to go to great extents to bring the other down, no matter how low or underhanded.

  7. This is the problem….People just take it personally. You can’t have a decent argument about something where people take it personally. Think we should talk about this once we can figure out that the topic is not about us, but about a national-freaking-issue.

  8. Electra, don’t get me wrong. I’m sick of the debate too. I totally side with Morq (to the point of total bias I’d say) but I still enjoy watching the two get it on. Both their satire is rather funny.

Again, you’re correct, it has started to get a little less constructive. But still, there are a few gems here and there.

    Scourge,
I’ve been reading up on my Plato (getting ready for uni) and Socrates says somewhere (I think it’s apology, but maybe Creto), that the mark of a man is the ability to seperate his line of reason from his line of emotion. I myself have failed at this time and time again, but I try.

I think that’s what both Indi and Morq need to do now. I mean satire, and even slinging mud is fun, as long as it’s going somewhere.

  9. “the mark of a man is the ability to seperate his line of reason from his line of emotion”

Sorry, didn’t mean to insinutate that i’ve mastered the art of doing it. We are all humans, and as it were we’d get all tied up emotionally in the event of an argument.

I do infact agree with Mahangu on the fact that, as long as its constructive and one can derive something or the other out of the said statements its fine…

    Comment by Scourge — April 25, 2005 @ 10:17 am

  10. gu and scourge : exactly my point. its just not good enough to debate about it to the extent that morq and indi are debating about it….its futile. it doesnt solve all the problems they yak about. thats all they do : yak. i mean obviously their SO passionate about it. so they need to get something DONE, i think. or just cease to care so much that they stoop down to these amazing standards.
